Legal Questions and Answers by Jonathan Stones of John Barkers
Question :-
My wife and myself are thinking of making our wills. We would rather like to take
advantage of one of the schemes which benefit charities. Could you advise us which schemes
are going to be taking place this year.
Answer :-
So far as I am aware there is just one initiative running at the moment, involving the
Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Their Free Solicitors Service started in August and runs
through until May.
Under the scheme, the Fund pays the legal costs of anyone making or changing a will at
one of the participating solicitors. My firm, John Barkers, are one of the firms taking
part - as are a number of other local legal practices.
The Fund, which carries out almost a third of all the cancer research being done in
Britain, hope of course that you will remember them in some way in your will, although you
do not have to do so.
A variation of the theme is the Law Societys Make A Will Week in which solicitors
pay their fees for writing wills to them. The money is donated to the chosen charities.
That event normally runs in November of each year.
We will ensure that readers are made aware of any new schemes which are launched, as
and when the situation arises.
