Day in history 1976 Princess Anne officially opens Telegraph House

Princess Anne, accompanied by the Hon. Vere Harmondsworth and Mr R M Shields, spent almost an hour at Telegraph House to officially open the 2 million newspaper office. She was given a tour of the offices and printing works before pushing a button to start the presses rolling. The opening of the newspaper office was marked by a special ceremony attended by dignitaries, staff and members of the local community. Princess Anne used the opportunity to speak about the importance of investment in the town and the importance of the building in providing news to the town, so essential to democracy. She also expressed her appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the staff at Telegraph House.

Princess Anne opens Telegraph House Grimsby, 1976

Princess Anne was warmly welcomed to the offices of Grimsby Evening Telegraph with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The princess spent almost an hour touring the premises, including its printing works and meeting staff. She pushed a button to start the presses rolling - an exciting moment for those present, during the ceremony the Princess gave a heart warming speech during which she said

may this building always be an important part of Grimsby's life and economy ... the heart of a town with such rich heritage

During her tour, Princess Anne was accompanied by Vere Harmondsworth, Chairman of the Associated Newspapers Group, as well as Mr R M Shields and Mrs Shields, who were both Managing Directors at the company. The event served as a celebration for the completion of their 2 million pound investment into Telegraph House.

Princess Anne’s visit to Grimsby was highly anticipated in 1976 and is still remembered fondly by those who attended. It was an opportunity to witness the princess officially open their newly-built offices and see first-hand the impressive printing works. To this day, the memory of that special moment remains a cherished one for local people in Grimsby.
