Warrington Information

Warrington is a large town and unitary authority area in Cheshire, England. Located on the banks of the River Mersey, Warrington has an estimated population of over 209,000 people and is situated approximately 20 miles east of Liverpool and 30 miles west of Manchester.

Location & Motorway Access

The town lies at the crossroads of the M6, M56 and M62 motorways which link it with both Liverpool and Manchester metropolitan areas. By car, Warrington is accessible from all directions within a short distance. The closest international airports are located respectively in Manchester (31 miles) and Liverpool (25 miles).

Logistics

Warrington is an important logistics hub due to its strategic location and good transport links. It has a range of freight forwarding services, with road access to major ports including Liverpool, Manchester, and Heysham. The town also has a mainline railway station which provides direct services to London Euston among other destinations.

Industry

The economy of Warrington is mainly driven by the service sector, although there are still some manufacturing companies present in the town. Major industries include engineering, electronics and software development for defence contractors as well as food processing. Other sectors such as retail, leisure and hospitality account for a smaller portion of the economy.

Population

As of 2017, Warrington had an estimated population of 209,000 people. This figure is estimated to have grown significantly since then due to a significant influx of new jobs in the service sector. It is predicted that this number will continue to grow as the town attracts more businesses and investors.

Investment

The town has seen considerable investment over recent years with major employers such as Amazon, B&M and Asda having set up premises there. The local government are also encouraging new businesses to move into the area with a range of financial incentives on offer. Warrington is also an appealing proposition for investors due to its strategic location, good transport links and wide range of skills available in the labour market.

Warrington Legal History

The city of Warrington is located in the North West of England and has a long legal history. The settlement of Warrington was established in the Anglo-Saxon period, as evidenced by its name which derives from Old English for “weir” or “dam”. Through the centuries, Warrington saw many changes to its legal system, with some notable developments taking place in recent years.

Medieval Times

In medieval times, the manor of Warrington became part of Widnes Fee and was held by the powerful Molineux family. It passed through several generations before being sold to Gilbert Ireland in 1593 who then transferred it to his son-in-law, Sir Richard Brooke. During these times, the main legal system that dictated life in Warrington was the Ecclesiastical Court of Chester. This court would have been used to resolve any disputes between members of the community.

The Industrial Revolution

The arrival of the railway heralded a period of rapid industrialisation and economic growth for Warrington. The town's first factories were established in 1835 and by 1880, there were over 30 different types of industry operating within the area. As a result, new laws were required to regulate working conditions and wages for those employed in industrial jobs. In addition, local authorities began to form committees which had the power to implement laws and regulations, such as the Warrington Board of Health in 1882.

The 20th Century

In the early part of the 20th century, Warrington underwent considerable changes as it prepared for the new industrial age. The town's population increased rapidly during this period and a number of new housing estates were constructed. This led to an increase in crime and a need for more stringent legal measures to deal with it. In 1922, a police committee was established which gave local police officers greater powers to enforce law and order in the area.

Modern Times

Since 2000, Warrington has seen further developments in its legal system. In 2008, the town was granted city status as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. This allowed for a greater level of autonomy and enabled local authorities to make their own laws and regulations. In addition, Warrington is now home to two courts – the Warrington Magistrates' Court and County Court – which deal with any criminal or civil cases that arise in the area.
