Origins of Barnsley

The origins of Barnsley date back to the Middle Ages when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The settlement was then known by its Saxon name ‘Bernelei’ which means ‘the clearing or meadow of Bern(e)l’. By 1249, Barnsley had become an established market town with two weekly markets held and around 200 people living in the area. This is also when Barnsley was officially granted its first charter.

Industrial Revolution

Barnsley’s industry flourished during the Industrial Revolution, with coal mining becoming increasingly important. By the 1850s Barnsley had become a centre of coal mining, along with iron founding, glass making and engineering. The population began to grow rapidly as immigrants moved to the town for work opportunities.
