History of Doncaster

Doncaster is a town located in South Yorkshire, England. It lies on the River Don and has a population of around 109,000 people. The town was originally founded by the Romans in AD 71 when they built a fort along the river. This fort later became one of the most important settlements in Roman Britain, known as Danum or 'The Fort of the Don'.

The first written reference to Doncaster comes from Saxon records which date back to 876. At this time it was already an established settlement which had become an important market town due to its favourable location by the River Don. In 1070 William I granted new privileges to the town, such as free trading and a weekly market. Throughout the medieval period Doncaster grew in importance, due to its strategic location on the Great North Road which connected London to Edinburgh.

During the English Civil War Doncaster was a Royalist stronghold and saw much fighting during the Siege of Doncaster in 1644. After the war, Doncaster continued to grow as an important market town and industrial centre. By 1834 it had become an incorporated borough with its own mayor, corporation and police force. The railway arrived in 1848 which further boosted its economic growth.

The 20th century saw a period of expansion for the town, but this was halted by two world wars. In World War II Doncaster suffered heavy damage due to bombing raids and air-raids, but fortunately most of its historic buildings survived. In the post-war period Doncaster saw further economic growth as industry flourished and new housing estates were built.

In 1974 Doncaster became part of the county of South Yorkshire, along with other towns such as Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley. Since then it has gone on to become an important regional centre for business, leisure and culture. The town's importance was recognised in 2002 when it was granted 'Fairtrade Town' status by the Fairtrade Foundation.
